I'm a chronic insomniac on the search for natural products to improve my sleep. I started really feeling the effects of poor sleep while working at busy tech startups around Toronto and San Francisco. I've since decided to take matters into my own hands and share my sleep improvement journey on this blog.

The Winners at a Glance

1. Best Overall

Gravid Weighted Blankets
4.9/5

The Gravid is in a class of its own. With eco-friendly cooling fabrics, ingenious zipper system and a unique stitching pattern, Gravid appears to be the perfect weighted blanket and I am confident it will last a very long time.

2. Best Budget

Simplesleep
4.6/5
Simplesleep is a dream come true for budget shoppers. At just over $100, it exceeds expectations and feels identical to other options in the $200-300 range. While it doesn't offer the same premium experience and enhancements as Gravid, it makes a great option for budget shoppers.

My Journey with Weighted Blankets

When it comes to weighted blankets, there are hundreds of options on the market. As a chronic insomniac, I started really feeling the effects of poor sleep while working at tech startups around Toronto and San Francisco. So when I first learned about weighted blankets in 2018, I was excited and optimistic. Could this be the solution I needed?

I did what most people would do. I Googled “weighted blankets”, then chose the cheapest option I could find. The result? Blissful sleep! My mind was calm and I was finally sleeping through the night…until the dreaded “moat” formed — all the weight shifted and pooled around the edges. Within a month, my beloved sleeping buddy had become a clumpy, lumpy mess that was uncomfortable and completely unusable.

So, back to Google I went. I noticed a lot of new options this time: new fabrics, new colours, new designs and all sorts of new tech being put into these weighted blankets.

After my first experience, I wanted to find a weighted blanket that would not only be comforting but stand the test of time. I tend to sleep hot, so I wondered if the “cooling” features from some brands will work? Do any of these blankets not clump after a while? I decided to purchase several different weighted blankets to find out..and write about my journey along the way.

Over the next few weeks, most of them arrived at my Toronto apartment (some much quicker than others – which we will get to).

Before we get into the specific brands, a quick introduction to weighted blankets. There are many reasons for a person to use a weighted blanket, including reducing anxiety and improving sleep quality. However, it’s important to choose the right blanket for you. Weighted blankets come in a variety of sizes, weights, and materials. It’s important to select a weight and size that will fit your body type and bedding for maximum benefit.

An In-Depth Look

If there is a gold standard for weighted blankets, it is Gravid. Plain and simple.

Everything from the customer service, to the fast shipping, to the actual product was leaps and bounds ahead of all the other weighted blankets I tried.

Calling the materials luxurious would be an understatement. I was wowed at how they looked and felt. I opted for the Night Owl Bundle which includes both the Breeze™ Cooling Cover, as well as the MicroPlush Cover. The Breeze™ Cover looks and feels like silk, but is made of an eco-friendly material called Tencel™ Lyocell. The plush cover is incredibly soft, and provides a warm cuddly embrace.

The inside weighted blanket has a unique double-stich design which gives me confidence that the weight will remain evenly spread over time. Gravid has the unique ZipperTech™ system to attach the cover to the blanket, so it feels like one cohesive unit. This makes it much easier to handle and move compared to its counterparts with fabric tie attachments.

Gravid is available in Twin, Queen and King sizes but make sure to choose carefully. According to their FAQs, the Gravid Weighted Blanket is sized to your body, so don’t expect it to drape over your bed like a regular comforter. If you are sharing with a partner, the Queen will be too small, so make sure you opt for the King size in that case.

Shipping and customer service were top notch. I sent a message at 4am on their chat, and to my surprise, somebody actually responded instantly. This wasn’t an AI bot, but an actual person who was very helpful. Once I placed my order, it shipped quickly and I got it within a day!

Overall, it feels like Gravid has considered all of the problems with weighted blankets and addressed each and every one of them. There’s nothing annoying or cumbersome in the entire experience, and everything just works.

Simplesleep is a winner for all price-conscious shoppers.

At an affordable price point, they are the best no-frill option on the market. The material feels very nice and soft, and the blanket feels very well-made. Simplesleep is almost identical to some of the other options on the market that are retailing for 2-3x its price.

It’s a simple 2-piece construction comprised of a blanket and a cover, attached with fabric ties. It’s nothing fancy, but it certainly does the job. The Duo Cover offers versatiity, since one side is made of a cooling cotton-like material, and the other is a soft, cozy microplush. They recommend placing your preferred side closest to your body when using, and it can be flipped over when you want to switch.

Shipping was fast and I never needed to contact their customer support, so I can’t comment on their efficiency.

The Nuzzie is the best option for people specifically looking for a chunky-knit weighted blanket. It looks beautiful, is washable and is eco-friendly.

Shipping was fast via Amazon Prime, and the packaging and product look very high-end.

The problem for me was not with Nuzzie specifically, but the chunky knit design itself. I understand the appeal of being breathable, but for me, it just felt like I had something on me that was not a blanket. It is made of a t-shirt type of material, and overall is a bit rigid. It feels like I will still need to put another blanket over it to feel secure and tucked in for bed.

Still, many people love the Nuzzie and they have great reviews on Amazon, but for me, this is simply not a blanket. I would opt for a traditional weighted blanket over a knit one any day.

I found myself putting my fingers in between the gaps and over time, my Nuzzie blanket actually lost its shape quite a bit and started growing large gaps in between the strands.

The Endy Weighted Blanket is a quality weighted blanket with a nice plaid print that sets it apart form others. The print is on one side, while the other side is a solid grey. It is built much like the Simplesleep with a cover and an inner weighted blanket, held together with fabric ties. The cover is made entirely of a microplush material, so it leans towards the warm side.

The weight stayed evenly distributed and I enjoying using this weighted blanket while lounging on my couch.

Both the inner blanket and cover are machine washable and the material feels nice and soft to the touch.

Unless you specifically desire a plaid design, the Simplesleep is almost identical at a lower price point (see above).

Hush is arguably the most popular weighted blanket in Canada and I was excited to order the Hush Iced 2.0 via Amazon Prime. My shipment arrived very quickly.

The packaging looks very premium and the blanket looks and feels very soft and luxurious. The cover is made of bamboo which is very smooth to the touch and is the basis of their Iced cooling technology. The cooling feature worked moderately well, but I still found myself feeling a slightly too warm (although it was an upgrade over the microplush options).

The blanket attaches to the cover with both fabric ties and a zipper, which holds the blanket well in place. For washing, they recommend only washing the outer cover, and spot-cleaning the inner portion. I experienced an issue when removing the cover because the zipper snags quite a bit, and this makes it difficult to remove and re-attach the cover for washing. I tried to contact Hush support about this issue but unfortunately never heard back.

The Hush Iced 2.0 is a great cooling weighted blanket, but at the same price-point, Gravid offers a more polished design and a better-performing cooling fabric (see above).

  1. Answer to Betty; I bought a 20 lbs weighted blanket from Bearably online. I was skeptical at first but I LOVE IT. It truly hugs you and I’ve never slept better. I lay it on my bed and then crawl under it, as it’s hard for me to pull it up like other covers. The chunky knit is attractive but if you don’t like the feel of it, put your sheet or a light blanket between you and the weighted blanket. Sleep well!

  2. I bought the gravid blanket (20 lbs)and it is still in the box. It is quite heavy. I am concerned about the weight of it when sleeping. Is it comfortable?

  3. not sure how you came up with such a rave review of Bearaby.. I have been trying to get my blanket for 5 weeks ( they billed my cc same day I ordered ) total BS communication as they issued a phoney tracking number ( I contacted the transport carrier and they have never received a pickup request ) Bearaby has said more than once that it has been shipped yet the courier knows nothing about it so please explain how you can rave about this company
